Øystein Aarseth

Øystein Aarseth, better known by his stage name Euronymous, was a Norwegian guitarist and a key figure in the black metal scene of the early 1990s. Born on March 22, 1968, in Oslo, he co-founded the influential band Mayhem, which became a cornerstone of the Norwegian black metal movement. Aarseth was known for his innovative guitar work and for shaping the genre’s dark and aggressive sound, characterized by high-pitched shrieks and tremolo picking. His notable works include Mayhem's seminal debut album, "De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas" (1994), which is often hailed as one of the greatest black metal albums ever. Aarseth's involvement in the scene extended beyond music; he was also a record label owner, founding Deathlike Silence Productions, which released important works from other black metal bands. Aarseth's impact on music is profound, as he helped define the aesthetic and ethos of black metal, influencing countless artists. His life was tragically cut short when he was murdered by fellow musician Varg Vikernes in 1993, an event that further cemented his legacy and the notoriety of the genre. His contributions continue to resonate within extreme music circles today.
